First workshop UP2030: lessons learned through Resilient BoTu 2028

Last Thursday the first workshop of UP2030 took place. UP2030 stands for Urban Planning and Design Ready for 2030. This project will support cities in driving the socio-technical transitions needed to meet their climate neutrality targets by 2030. Rotterdam is one of the pilot cities, and is participating with the project ‘Resilient BoTu 2028’. This ten-year project aims to make Bospolder-Tussendijken (BoTu) the first resilient district in Rotterdam.

Creation of a blueprint to upscale the learned lessons

Social and community resilience has been a defining approach in BoTu in the past five years. In BoTu, physical challenges like the energy transition and climate adaptation are used as a lever to strengthen social resilience. Through UP2030, Rotterdam works towards the creation of a blueprint or framework through a co-creation process led by Resilient Rotterdam, to upscale the learned lessons and principles of the Resilient BoTu 2028 approach to other districts and cities.

Aligning with programs and districts

To do this, it is important to align with programs and districts, by building an understanding towards ongoing activities and policy agendas, that are already guiding day-to-day implementation. This work will also continue to inform the work that the city is doing as part of its journey towards climate neutrality as 1 of the 112 cities under the Mission for Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.

Workshops

For that reason, we will organize four workshops. The first one took place last Thursday. The aim of the workshop was to start a conversation and to dive into the reality of themes like climate adaptation and the energy transition. Questions like ‘what can we learn from each other?’ and ‘are there common requirements, barriers, and opportunities?’ were central. The workshops will be carried out with different districts and programs, as well as with the program Resilient BoTu 2028 (and stakeholders) itself, looking back at the past few years, looking towards the upcoming years. The workshop with BoTu is expected to take place later this month.

We are very excited about the active participation and enthusiasm of all participants, their drive to learn from each other, to come up with new solutions, and to inspire each other. We are very much looking forward to the upcoming workshops!
